(NHIC) was founded in 1976 as a wholly owned subsidiary of EDS Corporation. On December 1, 1996, NHIC became the Medicare Part B contractor for Northern California. In August 1997, NHIC assumed the replacement contract for Medicare Part B in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. On December 1, 2000 NHIC became the Medicare Part B contractor for seven Southern California counties, making NHIC the first contractor in 30 years to process all of California's Medicare Part B claims. On July 1, 2006 NHIC became the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) for Jurisdiction A. Today for Medicare Part B we service 1.3 million beneficiaries and over 52,000 healthcare providers in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. In California we support 2.7 million beneficiaries and 91,000 providers. NHIC also provides its services to 7.7 million Medicare beneficiaries and 24,000 suppliers of Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) in DME MAC Jurisdiction A which includes Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
