NHIC is pleased to provide its services to Medicare beneficiaries and suppliers of Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) as the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) for Jurisdiction A, which includes, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington DC. As DME MAC for Jurisdiction A, NHIC provides services to 7.7 million Medicare beneficiaries and 24,000 suppliers of Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is working hard to expeditiously implement the new law.

DMEPOS Claims and Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS)

It is important that DMEPOS suppliers bill for items or services only when those items or services are ordered or referred by physician and non-physician practitioners who are eligible to order/refer such services. Physician and non-physician practitioners must be enrolled in the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) and of the type/specialty eligible to order/refer services for Medicare beneficiaries.

Changes in Payment for Oxygen and Oxygen Equipment

As a result of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA), CMS has implemented new oxygen payment rules and supplier responsibilities in order to safeguard beneficiaries who rely on oxygen services.
