CMS SELECTS NHIC TO ADMINISTER MEDICARE CLAIMS PAYMENT IN
MAINE, MASSACHUSETTS, NEW HAMPSHIRE, RHODE ISLAND AND VERMONT
- Reference to
CMS Press Release
On November 19, 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that NHIC, Corp.
was awarded the Jurisdiction 14 (J14) Medicare contract to provide the Medicare Fee-for-Services Part
A and Part B administrative services for the states of Maine (ME), Massachusetts (MA), New Hampshire
(NH), Rhode Island (RI) and Vermont (VT). J14 also includes the Regional Home Health and Hospice
Intermediary (RHHI) workload in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The award is part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) requiring the
replacement of all current Medicare Part A and B contracts with new contract
entities called Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs). As a MAC, NHIC,
Corp. will serve as a single point-of-contact entity processing Medicare Part A
and B claims from hospitals and other institutional providers, physicians, and
other practitioners within the J14 region. NHIC’s J14 MAC team includes
National Government Services, Inc. as a subcontractor bringing institutional
provider payment and home health claims processing support and expertise.
Implementation activities are now underway and we will assume full responsibility
for the claims processing work in the jurisdiction during 2009. Our top priority is
to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruptions to health care providers.
Over the next several months, NHIC will work closely with our team and outgoing
contractors to ensure a smooth transition. A comprehensive communications
plan to inform Medicare stakeholders of the latest implementation news and
activities is underway.
